Free medical resources for students and doctors
The Australian government provides a number of great resources for the medical community. These are well worth chasing up, and are useful for doctors and students. Although branded Aussie, these offer great value for practitioners outside this country, particularly if they can’t access similar information at home.
Forensic Medicine for Doctors
The Victorian Institute of Forensic Medicine offers an emailed version of their quarterly Coronial Communique. This is a summary of resolved coroner’s cases. There is also usually one or two teaching cases demonstrating some issue of communication or practice that may have affected the care of the deceased.
Coronial Communique. A must-read for students and young doctors.
Furthermore, they also have other information available, like booklet guidelines for filling in death certificates (download link)
and conference presentations, which are worth working through.
Good Medical Practice
In 2010, Australia is introducing a uniform national medical registration scheme. In the run up to this, the Australian Medical Council has launched Good Medical Practice, which is a draft of an Australian Medical Code of Conduct. This is worth a read for all Australians. It all seems to be pretty common sense, but I suppose documents like this aren’t written for people with common sense.
NHMRC best practice publications
I have mentioned the NHMRC publications before, but I will again as they are excellent resources for up to date, evidence-based medicine. Their most recent reports are concerned with Melanoma and Whiplash associated injuries. However, there are a heap of clinical guidelines available on their publication page. This is the perfect level of information to spew forth at exam time.
Medical Podcasts
Clinical Cases and Images blog has initiated a collaborative list of the best medical podcasts. Podcasts are a great way to keep up to date with changing medical information, which is what people care about. Check the list out and review your favourites.
