Creating a personal culture of focus

Zen Habits wrote a great post recently on how to get more done by using laser sharp focus. I would recommend reading the entire post, but I was particularly inspired by the suggestion to “Feng Shui my workplace.”

Author Jonathan Mead is not talking about new-age spirituality, but rather using your place of work to sharpen your focus.

My desk is surrounded by my kids drawings, boxes of slides, not to mention empty coffee cups. That stuff is important to me (particularly the coffee..), but I remember studying medicine with tables, lists and diagrams pinned around my desk. They kept me focused and reminded me of where I was going.

Today I am going to figure out some visual reminders of what I want to get done. At the moment, my priority is finishing my PhD on time, so I am going to make a big timeline so I can see it easily. Pictures of my slides, and prints of my great results (the ones that showed a statistical effect) will help, too.

In my experience as a patient, some doctors’ rooms are made up of accumulated rubbish, or even things that might impress patients. I suspect most aren’t inspired by their framed degree (a reminder of something already achieved). Some Obstetricians keep photos of their delivered babies, which seems very inspiring. What is it that you need to look at for inspiration?
