How to work on public computers without going mad

I have recently been dealing with University computers, and getting increasingly frustrated. They often have Firefox installed (my preferred browser), but you can’t install any plugins, including media players. Trying to use IE is even worse. I have the same trouble when I am using hospital computers - slow interface, no bookmarks, no plugins. I even have to deal with applications that I can’t stand.

To solve this, I have bought a portable drive for my applications. Advantages?

I can choose which apps I want. I normally use a mac, so I am not happy to put up with dodgy, difficult programs if I don’t need to (read Internet Explorer).
Using portable Firefox, I can set up a homepage with links to my gmail and uni account portals, making it much quicker to check my mail and do what I need to online
I can have a portable password manager so I can don’t have to remember all my license and password information
I can use delicious bookmarking (which I use on my main computer) so I never have to scribble down a web address to port into my main computer later
I can download files if I need to
I can use a task manager, or connect simply with an online task manager like Remember the Milk
I can install a chat plugin, or a twitter plugin if I like, to keep in touch. I personally wouldn’t do this, as it would make me a bit less productive.
If it works for you, you could even install open office, sunbird mail, games, IM clients and image managers.
If I choose to use a separate USB drive for transferring files home, then I can keep all the viruses in one place!

A list of portable software you might try is at wikipedia. A package containing Firefox, Sunbird mail, an IM client, some games and a task manager (for windows) can be downloaded from Source Forge. The components can also be downloaded individually.
