Anatomy software for macs

Anatomy is a perennial issue for medical students, and post-graduate trainees. Luckily, there are some excellent anatomy programs available for the Mac. These can be used when studying, or as a ready reference when working.

And don’t forget to read my previous posts on flash cards, mind-maps and radiology viewers, which are essential when studying anatomy.

RAAViewer

RAAViewer is a free program available for mac (and for Windows) that facilitates viewing of labelled images of human anatomy. The program is bundled with a basic set of human cross-sectional images, as reproduced in Eycleshymer’s A Cross-Section Anatomy. More images will become available with time through the website, and are going also be free.

VH Dissector

For those with a bit more cash, there is VH Dissector, which is $100 for a students license. This is a digital dissector for the virtual human project, containing male and female images. It contains interactive quizzes, and different angles of view. It claims to be useful for those who haven’t been exposed to lab dissection (which is probably most medical students nowadays).

A.D.A.M.

A.D.A.M.com (Look, I am not going to bother with all that extra punctuation from here on, ok?) has a number of anatomy solutions aimed at higher education. ADAM Anatomy practise allows you to test yourself on thousands of pinned images. It costs $65. You can also subscribe to ADAM online anatomy which gives access to an online interactive anatomy atlas (screenshot above).

Other online anatomy resources

The University of Washington has an interactive online atlas, which is free to access. The images are accurate, but not fancy, and there are interactive tests.

There is also a great online atlas hosted by Penn State. The images are human prosections, and structures are numbers. Answers are supplied.

Check out QTVR for a library of anatomical images and videos. There are other links to anatomy images here. Primal Pictures also has some images on its website, that are bundled with the software “Human Anatomy”.

Don’t forget to check out my previous posts on flash-cards, mind-maps and radiology viewers, which are also useful for anatomy study.
