Online Brainstorming with Bubbl.us

Online brainstorming allows us to share notes and interact with others over distances. I have written about MindNode before, which is nice, but I have found a web service that beats it hands down. Bubbl.us is a free online application that lets you set up mind maps online, which can be:

  • Shared with others over the internet
  • Emailed to others
  • Printed for offline use
  • Exported as images or HTML.

Although you can set up an account, you can make a simple mind map without registering. Here is an image of a simple mind map I created:

I also exported the same text as an HTML file, and it came up as this:

        • Comment on Medical Productivity bogs

        • Set goals

      • Posts to do

The interface is excellent, very intuitive. There are well-marked keyboard shortcuts for adding a sibling or child node, and nodes are able to be dragged around without difficulty. The symbols shapes are limited at this stage, but each node can hold a great deal of text. Future development plans include better searching, some user interface tweaks and an offline client.

Studying by collaborating on Mind Maps

Collaboration is the killer feature in this program. You can let anybody access your mind map and collaborate. I see this being an excellent tool for those studying for specialty exams. Often people form groups that meet through the week to study. Imagine the ability to collaborate on notes online with your group-members. Not only would study interaction be more interactive, but it would also be a lot more time flexible - you could be sharing information on the best management of stage four rectal cancer, while your colleague was rostered at work. Furthermore, the interface allows simple linking to external sites, so information you add to the map could be reference to an external PubMed abstract.

This is an excellent application, and has many uses in different industries. I encourage you to go and have a look at Bubbl.us.
