Online sources for medical video

Surgytec

Surgytec is an online collection of videos and presentations on varied surgical topics. They have heaps of laparoscopic videos of different procedures. It seems that the days of trying to showcase a new procedure at scientific conferences are slipping away, as many are promoting their new technique at this site. The videos cover multiple topics, including gynaecology, trauma, opthalmology and endoscopy.

It must be mentioned that some surgeons have uploaded a lot of video to this site, so their work and techniques are over-represented.

Other Online Medical Video Sources

When I think of online video, I think of YouTube. There is quality video on the site, but there is a lot more that is sensationalist and aimed at non-medical public. There is some nice medical education video at CineMed. There is also some short clips that might be useful for teaching on molecular processes, clinical examination, molecular pathology and physiology and surgical procedures.

Medicinefeed has posted a list of online medical and health video resources, which is worth perusing. University of California TV has lectures and grand rounds for on-demand download. Free Medical Video has a a wide variety of video, focussed on training and medical examination.

ITunesU for medical professionals

But the mother lode of quality medical video is at iTunes, and specifically iTunesU. There are multiple video podcasts supported. THe neat thing about it, for those who are not familiar, you can subscribe or you can download individual articles. So I subscribe to podcasts that sit within my field, but browse those that deal with broader medicine. It is worth spending a bit of time browsing this section of iTunes, but you might look out for the excellent anatomy vidcasts that are available from the College of Public Health of the East Tennessee State Uni. Definitely a good thing to have in your iPod when it comes to exam time.

There is more information on how to use iTunesU on the Apple support page.
