OSX mind-mapping freeware: MindNode
Mind-mapping is an excellent technique for doctors and medical staff. It is well-suited to those studying or taking notes for any purpose, including EBM, pathology meetings, traditional studying, project planning or even patient notes. MindNode is a free package for OSX. It looks like a really sweet mac-like interface, with not too many frills.
What is Mind-mapping and what can it do for me?
Mind-mapping is a visual method of looking at information. It is great for non-linear studying and brainstorming. To spark your imagination, here are some great uses for mind-maps:
1. Project planning (as suggested by David Allen of GTD fame).
2. Studying. Use a map for each topic and subtopic. The study applications are limitless.
3. Taking notes when reading journal articles. Not only does this keep you concentrating, it can improve your understanding and provide a nice summary of the article that can be skimmed when needed.
4. Patient notes. This is particularly useful for complicated patients, with many comorbidities. Keep a “map” of their conditions and where you are headed with each one.
5. Operative notes. This is a valid shorthand technique for writing procedure notes for your own records, particularly when you have a dictated standard longhand copy you can keep with the patient records. It is also invaluable for surgical trainees keeping their procedure techniques, with the ability to note potential complications, relevant anatomy and danger spots.
6. Brainstorming. The original use for mind-maps and still going strong!
Do you have other uses for Mind-mapping in your medical work?
